Explanation

Used to express that regardless of which item within the same category is involved, the same statement applies to all of them.

Usage

It lists examples that belong to the same semantic group, not unrelated items. The meaning is 'whether it is A or B' or 'no matter if it is A or B.' It is often used in formal or written style.

Formation

Attach であれ or であろうと to nouns, and present two or more examples from the same category.

Examples

事故であれ災害であれ、緊急時に落ち着いて行動できる人は多くないだろう。

じこであれさいがいであれ、きんきゅうじにおちついてこうどうできるひとはおおくないだろう。

Whether it is an accident or a disaster, there are probably not many people who can act calmly in an emergency.

絵画であれ音楽であれ、芸術には素質が求められる。努力だけでは難しいのだ。

かいがであれおんがくであれ、げいじゅつにはそしつがもとめられる。どりょくだけではむずかしいのだ。

Whether it is painting or music, talent is required in the arts. Effort alone is not enough.
