Indicates that an action or motion is currently in progress or continuing.

Attach います to the て-form to describe what is happening right now. Also used for ongoing states.

Verb in て-form + います

山田さんは今新聞を読んでいます。

やまださんはいましんぶんをよんでいます。

Mr. Yamada is reading a newspaper now.

子どもたちは公園で遊んでいます。

こどもたちはこうえんであそんでいます。

The children are playing in the park.

今雨が降っていますか。はい、降っています。

いまあめがふっていますか。はい、ふっています。

Is it raining now? Yes, it is.
