Pattern

Adding ます to a verb makes the sentence polite and formal. It is used in positive present and future tense statements.

Take the verb stem and add ます to talk politely about actions. The form works for both present and future events.

Verb stem + ます

わたしは毎朝コーヒーを飲みます。

わたしはまいあさこーひーをのみます。

I drink coffee every morning.

かれは日本語を勉強します。

かれはにほんごをべんきょうします。

He studies Japanese.

私たちは来週京都へ行きます。

わたしたちはらいしゅうきょうとへいきます。

We will go to Kyoto next week.

きのうは七時に起きます。

きのうはしちじにおきます。

Yesterday I got up at seven.

毎日歩きます。

まいにちあるきます。

I walk every day.
