This JLPT N5 grammar point explains how to use 〜と言います correctly, with formation rules and example sentences.

Pattern

Used to quote what someone says or said. Can be direct (exact words) or indirect (plain form).

Put と after the quoted sentence, then add 言います (present) or 言いました (past). The tense inside the quote stays the same.

Quoted sentence + と + 言います / 言いました

ねる前に「おやすみなさい」と言います。

ねるまえに「おやすみなさい」といいます。

We say 'Good night' before going to bed.

ミラーさんは来週東京へ行きますと言いました。

みらーさんはらいしゅうとうきょうへいきますといいました。

Mr. Miller said, 'I will go to Tokyo next week.'

山田さんは明日休むと言いました。

やまださんはあしたやすむといいました。

Mr. Yamada said he will take a day off tomorrow.

先生は宿題を忘れないでくださいと言いました。

せんせいはしゅくだいをわすれないでくださいといいました。

The teacher said, 'Please don’t forget your homework.'

田中さんは英語が苦手だと言っています。

たなかさんはえいごがにがてだといっています。

Mr. Tanaka says he is not good at English.
