Pattern

For Group I verbs, change the last syllable of the ます-form to the あ-line equivalent and add ない.

Use to make the negative present form for Group I verbs.

Replace the last sound before ます with its あ-line counterpart, then add ない. Exceptions: verbs like かいます, あいます use わない.

かきます → かかない

to write → not write

よみます → よまない

to read → not read

あそびます → あそばない

to play → not play
