Pattern

Used to express the past tense of sentences with nouns and な-adjectives.

For affirmative past tense, replace です with でした. For negative past tense, replace じゃありません / ではありません with じゃありませんでした / ではありませんでした.

Noun/な-adjective + でした (affirmative) / Noun/な-adjective + じゃありませんでした (negative)

きのうは晴れでした。

きのうははれでした。

It was sunny yesterday.

先週のパーティーは楽しみじゃありませんでした。

せんしゅうのパーティーはたのしみじゃありませんでした。

Last week's party was not fun.

このホテルは静かでした。

このホテルはしずかでした。

This hotel was quiet.
