Pattern

Join two ideas with a noun or a な-adjective by using で. The sentence continues after で.

Use to describe the same subject with more than one fact or quality. Do not use for contrasting ideas — use が instead.

For nouns: noun + で. For な-adjectives: remove な and add で.

さくらさんは日本人で、英語の先生です。

さくらさんはにほんじんで、えいごのせんせいです。

Sakura is Japanese and an English teacher.

田中さんは元気で、まじめな人です。

たなかさんはげんきで、まじめなひとです。

Mr. Tanaka is healthy and serious.

この町はにぎやかで、食べ物がおいしいです。

このまちはにぎやかで、たべものがおいしいです。

This town is lively and the food is delicious.

山田さんは学生で、アルバイトもしています。

やまださんはがくせいで、アルバイトもしています。

Mr. Yamada is a student and also works part-time.

この公園は広くて、きれいで、静かです。

このこうえんはひろくて、きれいで、しずかです。

This park is spacious, beautiful, and quiet.
