Explanation
Used to indicate that something happens or is the case despite what would be expected given another fact. Often translates as 'although' or 'even though'.
Usage
Expresses the speaker’s feelings of surprise, dissatisfaction, regret, or reproach. Cannot be followed by statements expressing the speaker’s own intention or inducement.
Formation
Attach のに to the plain form of verbs and adjectives; for な-adjectives and nouns, insert な before のに.
Examples
昨日早く寝たのに、まだ眠いです。
きのうはやくねたのに、まだねむいです。Even though I went to bed early yesterday, I’m still sleepy.
雨が降っているのに、サッカーを続けています。
あめがふっているのに、サッカーをつづけています。Although it’s raining, they’re continuing to play soccer.
このコートは高いのに、もう破れてしまいました。
このコートはたかいのに、もうやぶれてしまいました。Even though this coat was expensive, it’s already torn.
