〜か／〜かどうか

Pattern

Used to embed a question within a sentence. If the question contains an interrogative word, か is used. If it does not, かどうか is used.

Helps turn a direct question into a clause inside a larger sentence. かどうか is often used for yes/no questions without an interrogative.

For questions with an interrogative, attach か. For yes/no questions without an interrogative, attach かどうか.

誰がこの絵を描いたか知っていますか。

だれがこのえをかいたかしっていますか。

Do you know who painted this picture?

その店がまだ開いているかどうか、電話で確認しましょう。

そのみせがまだあいているかどうか、でんわでかくにんしましょう。

Let’s check by phone whether that shop is still open.

山田さんがいつ来るかはまだわかりません。

やまださんがいつくるかはまだわかりません。

We still don’t know when Yamada will come.
