Explanation
Expresses the speaker’s belief or intention about something, often implying that this belief might not align with reality or others’ perceptions. It can also be used to criticize someone, implying they think they did something but actually didn’t or didn’t do it properly.
Usage
Commonly used to state one’s own assumption or feeling about something, or to point out someone’s mistaken belief or inadequate action.
Formation
Attach つもりだ to the plain form of verbs, adjectives, or nouns (with appropriate copula forms).
Examples
彼は手伝ったつもりだが、実際にはほとんど何もしていない。
かれはてつだったつもりだが、じっさいにはほとんどなにもしていない。He thinks he helped, but in reality, he hardly did anything.
私は十分説明したつもりでしたが、彼は理解していなかったようです。
わたしはじゅうぶんせつめいしたつもりでしたが、かれはりかいしていなかったようです。I thought I had explained it well, but it seems he didn’t understand.
部屋を掃除したつもりだったが、母にまだ汚いと言われた。
へやをそうじしたつもりだったが、ははにまだきたないといわれた。I thought I had cleaned the room, but my mother said it was still dirty.
