Pattern

Used to present a representative example among many similar things.

Frequently used in formal contexts to introduce the most prominent example in a group.

Attach to a noun representing the most typical example. Often followed by a plural or group-related noun.

この都市には、美術館をはじめとして、さまざまな文化施設がある。

このとしには、びじゅつかんをはじめとして、さまざまなぶんかしせつがある。

This city has various cultural facilities, starting with the art museum.

ヨーロッパには、フランスをはじめ、多くの国が芸術に力を入れている。

ヨーロッパには、フランスをはじめ、おおくのくにがげいじゅつにちからをいれている。

In Europe, many countries, beginning with France, invest heavily in the arts.

会場には市長をはじめとする多くの来賓が出席した。

かいじょうにはしちょうをはじめとするおおくのらいひんがしゅっせきした。
