〜ばかりだ・〜一方だ

Pattern

Indicates that a situation is continuing to change in one direction, often worsening.

ばかりだ is often used when the change is negative. 一方だ is more neutral and can be used for both positive and negative developments.

Attach to the dictionary form of a verb, often with verbs indicating change (e.g., 増える, 減る, 悪化する).

最近は依頼が増えるばかりで、休む暇がない。

さいきんはいらいがふえるばかりで、やすむひまがない。

Lately, the requests keep increasing, and I have no time to rest.

都市の構造は複雑になるばかりで、道に迷ってしまった。

としのこうぞうはふくざつになるばかりで、みちにまよってしまった。

The structure of the city keeps getting more complex, and I got lost.

その事件以来、二人の関係は冷たくなる一方だ。

そのじけんいらい、ふたりのかんけいはつめたくなるいっぽうだ。

Since that incident, their relationship has only been getting colder.

ウイルスの感染が広がる一方で、医療現場はひっ迫している。

ウイルスのかんせんがひろがるいっぽうで、いりょうげんばはひっぱくしている。

As the virus spreads further, the medical field is becoming increasingly strained.
