Explanation
Used to express that if even such an extreme example is true, then other cases are naturally the same or even more so.
Usage
It is a formal expression similar to さえ, but often sounds a little stiffer. It presents an extreme or surprising example and emphasizes that even that is included.
Formation
Attach すら to a noun. In some cases, ですら is also used.
Examples
彼のうしろ姿には、怒りだけではなく悔しさすらにじんでいた。
かれのうしろすがたには、いかりだけではなくくやしさすらにじんでいた。In his retreating figure, not only anger but even frustration was showing through.
電車は雪の日などにはたびたび遅れる。四十分も待たされることすらある。
でんしゃはゆきのひなどにはたびたびおくれる。よんじゅっぷんもまたされることすらある。Trains are often delayed on snowy days and the like. There are even times when you are made to wait forty minutes.
自分で望んで選んだ道にすら確信が持てなくなってしまった。
