Explanation
Used to express that the state of something has reached an extreme limit.
Usage
It is a formal expression and often attaches to adjectives with a negative evaluative meaning, especially Sino-Japanese words. 極まりない expresses that something is extremely so. The fixed form 感極まって is also commonly used to mean being overwhelmed with emotion.
Formation
Attach 極まる to a na-adjective stem. Use 極まりない with forms such as ナAなこと or イAいこと.
Examples
このような不当な結論が下されたことは、遺憾極まる。
このようなふとうなけつろんがくだされたことは、いかんきわまる。The fact that such an unjust conclusion was reached is extremely regrettable.
単調極まる毎日から抜け出したいと、彼は一人で旅に出た。
たんちょうきわまるまいにちからぬけだしたいと、かれはひとりでたびにでた。Wanting to escape a life of utter monotony, he set out alone on a journey.
ついに優勝を決めたその選手は、インタビューの最中、感極まって涙を流した。
ついにゆうしょうをきめたそのせんしゅは、インタビューのさいちゅう、かんきわまってなみだをながした。The athlete who had finally secured the championship was overcome with emotion during the interview and shed tears.
気に入らない相手には返事すらしないなんて、あの人の態度は無礼極まりない。
きにいらないあいてにはへんじすらしないなんて、あのひとのたいどはぶれいきわまりない。Not even replying to someone simply because you do not like them—his attitude is extremely rude.
失業しているうえ子どもにもお金がかかり、暮らしが苦しいこと極まりない。
しつぎょうしているうえこどもにもおかねがかかり、くらしがくるしいこときわまりない。On top of being unemployed and having children who require money, life is unbearably difficult.
